LIFE AND FATE // Review
Friday, February 26th, 2010 by DaveWell, what to say about the stage adaptation of Vasily Grossman’s Life and Fate. It goes for nearly three and a half hours and is in Russian with subtitles projected onto a little screen above the stage. On paper it sounds like a rough night at the theatre, and true it does take a sizable amount of patience and immense concentration to get through it, but I’m proud to say I did get through it, I MOSTLY understood what was going on and I enjoyed it a lot!

We’re pretty into HEALTH just have a look at John’s previous post here and we’re excited that they’re going to come and make some loud noises Beck’s Music Box.
These guys are racking up some massive cool points and not just for their skinny jeans, or playing but for stuff like touring with Nine Inch Nails. According to bassist, John Famiglietti “We don’t want you to only like [our music] because you’re supposed to like it or you like it because it’s cool. I don’t want you to scratch your fucking head. It should be immediate… I think [the new album] just makes our music more effective.” -from this Redefine Magazine interview.
SOUL KITCHEN // FESTIVAL FILMS REVIEW
Monday, February 22nd, 2010 by Megs
Starring: Adam Bousdoukos, Moritz Bleibtreu, Birol Unel, Anna Bederke
Directed by: Fatih Akin
Written by: Fatih Akin (screenplay); Adam Bousdoukos (screenplay)
Another quirky story out of Germany, Soul Kitchen centers on Zinos and his restaurant that although lacking quality food has boundless warmth and plods along doing a not so roaring trade serving subpar café food to a loyal few.
Zinos is having a hard time of it, the place is sinking, his girlfriend is leaving for Japan and him to follow and to top it off his career criminal brother is out on day release and needs a job! Enter Birol Ünel a volatile knife wielding chef whose talent and temper make him a necessary evil who just might help save the day.
Revamping the restaurant and bringing his brother on board proves a success that soon turns sour and the events in between are what really make this off the wall story work.
The relationship between Zinos and his absentee girlfriend vs. his love of the eatery vs. his responsibility to his wayward yet lovable brother combined with a tantrum throwing chef and droll chain smoking waitress all add up to highly entertaining film featuring a cast of characters you can’t help but feel great affection for and a stellar soundtrack of old soul classics.
FIVE MINUTES OF HEAVEN // FILM REVIEW
Friday, February 19th, 2010 by Megs
Opening in mid 70’s Belfast, Five Minutes of Heaven is a story with a heavy heart told in a wonderfully straight forward and quite masculine manner. When sixteen year old Alistair Little packs a gun and heads off to kill a young catholic boy he has no idea he will do so in front of the mans young brother Joe but that is exactly what occurs, the build up to this shocking event isn’t too long but filled with that sickly adrenaline filled dread that comes with a horrible decision already made in ones mind.
Flash forward thirty years and the two main characters are speeding towards each other, literally, in chauffer driven cars. TV programme has given them the chance to meet face to face and the two leads played convincingly by Liam Neeson (Little) and James Nesbitt (Joe Griffen) convey the conflicting emotions of men bound by an unspeakable act superbly.
THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART // TICKET GIVEAWAY
Thursday, February 18th, 2010 by Matt
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are a delightful pop band with a fuzzy edge that some people are saying gives them a bit of shoegagaze lean. Shared Boy/Girl vocals and a lot of time spent with books just makes them so cute that I may have pinch their cheeks at the gig.
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are playing at Beck’s Music Box Fri 19 Feb, 8.00PM and we have a double pass for a lucky Cut and Paster.

DIRTY THREE // THIS IS ABOUT LOVE
Friday, February 12th, 2010 by Mattby: malone.
I am nineteen again. Standing in a room under a friend’s house. Things are not quite right, I could be very drunk, it’s hard to tell. A sound overpowers me like a heavy, surging sea. Scraping sonic whitecaps from a bow that refuses to be either still or gentle. My first experience of Dirty Three.
“There you go, that’s two miracles tonight!” Warren Ellis.
I am much older, I stand behind the mixing desk as these memories from more than a decade ago are summoned by the three dishevelled shamans onstage.
Warren Ellis announces a simple truth “this song….is…about…love” Well they are all songs about love, sometimes a drowning love that has given up trying to fight its way to the surface and breathe. Sometimes it is a bitter, passionate fight, blood vessels bulging around its constricted throat. Warren Ellis kicks out, his right leg a parallel to the ground and then I am in my memory again, this time it is hot and Warren Ellis has his foot stuck in the kick drum. Eventually he extracts it and staggers away from the kit, he loses a shoe but not a single note. Tonight he breaks something too, A connection between the violin and an amplifier, there are frantic moments and genuine disappointment whenever the violin sound is suddenly lost.
Mick Turner is stoic while Jim White’s drumming is the antagonist to Warren Ellis’ Violin. For a moment my thoughts are drawn to the Tren Brothers playing in a pub that no longer exists.
Don’t Look Back invites great artists to revisit their classic works. Sonic Youth played Daydream Nation, The Stooges Funhouse under that banner. These gigs create their own special kind of nostalgia. It is about love. The audience who love an album so much, they drive the artists to distraction and the artists’ love for the sounds that create those embracing moments in music.
Tonight is a requiem. Tonight Ocean Songs is laid to rest under the Authentic Celestial Music. I am proud to be able to say “I was there.”

CUT AND PASTE // FESTIVAL OPENING NIGHT IMPRESSION

The giant hamster wheel with trees and Bell Tower
by: malone
La Fura dels Baus are not your average theatre company. Their work regularly challenges audiences all over the world by using non-traditional settings and exploring performance on gigantic scales.
It is impossible at a La Fura performance to sit back and remain detached from the action. The Supreme Court Gardens were full to overflowing, no chairs, sitting would have resulted in a severe trampling, by the time the huge crane began its dance and the mob beneath surged around the performers who retaliated by hurling bombs into the crowd filled with flour and water. It’s part of the La Fura approach, limit the distinction between performer and audience, make it feel dangerous and visceral.
Designed specifically for Perth Festival, this performance captured Perth’s most important contemporary symbol – the crane. Huge, imposing and repeated across our skyline, cranes evoke a sense of industrial progress. Someone recently suggested in a tweet that Perth should have a sign up at the Airport advising visitors that we are “under construction” it seems La Fuara tapped into that Potential Perth, a new, open, lively, creative place: Under Construction.
The counterpoint was equally present in Friday’s Festival Opening Performance, evinced by people in what can only be described as a giant hamster wheel that descended from the sky, an angry machine charged forward and back through the crowd, from time to time it would rear up and its horns lurch out above the crowd. These things remind us that industrial progress is not without cost.
Yet this performance was also a celebration of humanity in a world lurching after its desires. The solo human singing voice provided a counterpoint to the mechanical banging and deep thrum soundtrack. A final montage of white suited people dancing in the air, the sky lit up with fireworks and at ground level a stage filled with performers sharing joy with the audience.
The crowd drew breath as one and then streamed out into the night.
CUT AND PASTE // PERTH FESTIVAL OPENING NIGHT REMIX
Wednesday, February 10th, 2010 by MattFeaturing the extraordinary performance of La Fura Del Baus and scenes from the Beck’s Music Box Artist Preview Party we have created a Cut and Paste Remix of the Festival 10 Opening Night, Friday 6 February 2010.
Footage from Nicole Norelli has been cut and mixed against a beat from Paper Chain Records‘ Taku.
This is a slightly surreal video that goes some way to capturing the energy of the night itself.
