Jim Sclavunos speaks to Cut & Paste about Faustian Pact ahead of the debut performance in the Festival Gardens on Feburary 14, 2012.

Faustian Pact, has been specifically created for the Perth International Arts Festival, and combines spontaneous electro-acoustic and synthesizer accompaniment utilizing real-time electronic processing triggered by movement, light and breath control with ritualistic group staging led by Pellerano. The performance includes a 60-minute “cut-up” version of the film.

Silver Alert is the Brooklyn-based improvisational duo/remix production team consisting of Jim Sclavunos (Grinderman and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds) and Peter Mavrogeorgis (who engineered The National’s acclaimed album High Violet). They have joined forces with performance artist Micki Pellerano to present an entirely new live score to F.W. Murnau’s 1926 classic film Faust.

This interview was filmed early in the festival and Jack wasn’t yet aware of just how successful the festival would become. Here he discusses some of his highlights as well as giving you a bit of background about himself and his role as Program Director.

Pierre Bismuth

French artist Pierre Bismuth shared an Academy Award with his co-writers, Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman, for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in 2005. He was recently in Perth to launch an exhibition of three works, in which Bismuth deploys humour to disorientate the viewers’ understanding of cultural forms like print media and film.

Cut & Paste caught up with him at the Fremantle Arts Centre to dicuss his works and the ever changing world of contemporary art.

Last Hope

Sunday, February 21st, 2010 by Nicole Norelli

Last Hope is the fusion of sixteen original short films compiled by Andrew Kidman accompanied by a unique soundtrack put together by Spunk Records. Some of the artists include SmogSufjan StevensMogwaiMy Morning JacketDirty ThreeHolly ThrosbyVetiverBonnie Prince Billy, Machine Translations and The Brown Birds From Windy Hill. The films centre on the theme of the splendor of the sea and the infinite myth and culture of surfing.

Andrew Kidman chose six of his favourite surfing filmmakers to create short films that were inspired by the ocean. The filmmakers include Albert Falzon, Jon Frank, Monty Webber, Michelle Lockwood, Patrick Trefz and Richard Kenvin. Kidman also provides four shorts of his own.

On Friday 20th February, Last Hope played to a most welcoming crowd at the Astor Theatre, Mount Lawley. After a fitting introduction by Andrew Kidman himself, the films were brought to life with an amazing live soundtrack by The Brown Birds of Windy Hill, Machine Translations and the beautiful and absolute highlight of the night: Miss Holly Throsby. The affect of live music articulates the breathtaking beauty of the ocean and strengthens a connection we share with it. The result is at times emotional, selfless, humorous and sincere. It was a welcome end to a busy week in the rat race. A relaxing and thought provoking escape, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Amreeka // Film Review

Friday, February 19th, 2010 by Megs

Starring: Nisreen Faour, Melkar Muallem, Hiam Abbass, Yussuf Abu-Warda, Alia Shawkat

Directed by: Cherien Dabis
Written by: Cherien Dabis

watch the trailer here

Amreeka tells the, at time arduous, tale of Muna a single mother and her teenage son Fadi and their journey from Palestine to America, namely Illinois.

The opening scenes are dreary and dry, you can almost feel the gritty sand and trickling sweat as you watch Muna travel from her place of work via a slowly moving checkpoint. The dusty landscape, rutted roads and soldiers with guns nicely set up the leap to the U.S where it is freezing cold and full of light and colour.

But it’s Munas struggle to build a life stateside that is the real story here, her struggle to find a job worthy of her university education and years of experience and the blatant racism faced by herself and more so her son are truly heart wrenching as is the secondary story of the impact of current world events namely terroism in the first world is having on Munas sister and her family, the desire to live in the homeland, a failing business, rebelling very American teenage daughter, (played beautifully by Alia Shawkat of arrested development fame).

At times despairing Munas tough take on her situation and her drive to make a better life and blend her family is sincere and extremely moving, I found her to be very endearing, the relationships cultivated with a teenage co worker and her sons principle are highlights.
